Christmas First

Our "first from the sea, first to the stars" city is the oldest continuous English-speaking settlement in North America. That's just one of many momentous turning points in Hampton's and our nation's history.

America’s first English-style Christmas was held in what is now Hampton. Hampton is the site of the first Christmas celebrated in the New World, when starving colonists from Jamestown visited the Kecoughtan Indians in December 1608 and shared oysters, fish and holiday cheer. A year later the future Hampton was settled, originally named for the Kecoughtan tribe.

Today, Hampton holiday celebrations take place in November and December and are showcased by 100 Miles of Lights, a regional holiday promotion combining events and activities within the 100-mile distance from Richmond to Virginia Beach.
