NASA

Our "first from the sea, first to the stars" city is the oldest continuous English-speaking settlement in North America. That's just one of many momentous turning points in Hampton's and our nation's history.

The first site of NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) was in Hampton. Home to Langley Air Force Base, which has served the nation in conflicts dating from World War I to the Gulf War, Hampton served as a training ground for America’s first astronauts, the Mercury Seven.

Langley Research Center was chosen in 1958 as the site for planning the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) exploration of space. The Mercury Seven – America’s first spacemen arrived in April 1959 to begin training.

Hampton’s space legacy lives on today through hands-on exhibits at the Virginia Air & Space Center. Visitors can see the Apollo XII Command Module, a moon rock and airplane exhibits tracing the evolution of flight, as well as a five-story IMAX Theater offering related film
